Corporate Social Responsibility

Sambandam Group is known for its tradition of philanthropy and community service. The Group’s philosophy is to reach out to the community by establishing service-oriented philanthropic institutions in the field of education, vocational training and healthcare as the core focus areas. The Group continues to play an active and important role in the welfare of the local communities.
Promoters of the SSML right from its incorporation in 1973 had been visualizing to provide service to the society in various forms and constituted four charitable trusts for providing health care, education, vocational skills and so on, for which the Company has been contributing every year substantial amount from the Company’s earnings. The trusts constituted by the promoters and the major activities of the trusts include the following:

‘S.Palaniandi Mudaliar Charitable Trust’ is a public Charitable Trust created on 24th January 1975 with the objective of providing education, training, research and development and healthcare to the deserving people living in and around Salem.  S.Palaniandi Mudaliar Charitable Trust manages a multi-specialty hospital known as S.Palaniandi Mudaliar Memorial Hospital (SPMM Hospital) located on Cuddalore main road, Salem.  It is well equipped with the most modern machinery and infrastructure, providing healthcare facilities including Cardiology, Neurology, Dentistry and Pre/Post Maternity care.

One of the special feature of the trust is it is providing open heart surgery and live heart surgery and has conducted 500+ surgeries so far. The beneficiaries are happy and enjoying their lives post surgery as well.

‘Sengunthar Education Trust’ is a public charitable trust created on 8th January 1982 with the main objective of providing higher education to the poor and needy students from rural area.   With that aim, the trust established “Salem Polytechnic College” in 1983, “Salem Polytechnic Industrial Training Centre” (ITC) in 1992 and “Sengunthar Matriculation Higher Secondary School” in 1999 which have been providing education and employment enhancing vocational skills to thousands of students during the past three decades.

‘Trust for Mentally Challenged Children’ was created on 5th January 2000 with the objective of taking care of palsy/mentally retarded children, to provide physical and mental treatments and train them to join the mainstream and also arrange job placements to such persons.   The trust started a day care centre called SIMEC (Salem Institute for Mentally Challenged) on the same day (05.01.2000) with qualified, Physiotherapists, Special Educators and Social workers to spot, train and integrate the Special Children in to the society and guide them to lead a dignified life. During the past 20 years, SIMEC, with its holistic approach, has remarkably improved the quality of lives of hundreds of Special Children in and around Salem, Dharmapuri, Namakkal and Krishnagiri districts.

SSML has been upholding the Group’s tradition by earmarking a part of its income for carrying out its social responsibilities.   Promoters of the Company believe that social responsibility is not just a corporate obligation that has to be carried out, but it is one’s dharma.   Therefore, philanthropic endeavor is a reflection of the Company’s spiritual conscience and this provides a way to discharge its responsibilities to the various sections of the society. SSML has been carrying out Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities for a long time through the SPMM Charitable Trust, which is a duly registered autonomous charitable trust, in the field of Education and Healthcare, while also pursuing CSR activities for the benefit of the community in and around Salem. SSML shall seek to impact the lives of the underprivileged by supporting and engaging in activities that aim at improving their wellbeing.   Promoters of the Company have dedicated to the cause of empowering people, educating them and in improving their quality of life.    While they undertake programs based on the identified needs of the community, education and healthcare remain their priority.   Across the different program areas identified by the trust, its main endeavor is to reach the underprivileged and the marginalized sections of the society to make a meaningful impact on their lives. The aforesaid trusts are committed to identifying and supporting programs aimed at:
  • Empowerment of the underprivileged sections of the society through education, access to and awareness about job oriented technical and vocational skills and the like;
  • Provision of access to basic necessities like healthcare, drinking water & sanitation and the like;
  • Work towards eradicating hunger and poverty, through livelihood generation and skill development programmes;
  • Provision of artificial limbs and life support system to those who lost their limbs in accidents to facilitate and reinstate their independent livelihood;
  • Supporting environmental and ecological balance through afforestation, soil conservation, rain water harvesting, conservation of flora & fauna, and similar programmes;
  • Promotion of sports through training and development of sportspersons;
  • Undertake rural development projects; and
  • Such other programs that fall under the Company’s CSR Policy which are aimed at the empowerment of underprivileged sections of the society.
Accordingly, the programmed areas include the following:
  • Providing basic health care facilities to economically backward societies,
  • Improving access to education,
  • Provision of Skill Development / Vocational Training,
  • Rural Development,
  • Environmental sustainability,
  • Promoting Sports, arts & culture,
  • Sustainable livelihood.
The Company shall implement its CSR programs / projects through one or more of the aforesaid trusts or such other trusts as considered appropriate by the CSR Committee constituted for the purpose and shall ensure that SSML implement its CSR in true spirit. CSR activities are undertaken by the Company through the aforesaid trusts in the following manner:

CSR Spend: The requirement and the spend is monitored by a special committee formed for the purpose and the cumulative spend so far is Rs 36 lacs.
